Lithographs

A love for lithography.……

My love for lithography began in college, where I had the privilege of studying traditional stone lithography. From the moment I drew on a limestone slab, I was hooked. Every lithographer may say the same, but there truly is nothing like it—the tactile sensation of the stone beneath your hand and its unparalleled ability to capture the subtle nuances of a drawn line. To me, it remains unmatched in the printmaking world.

When I transitioned to working in my home studio, maintaining a non-toxic workspace made it impractical to create a traditional stone lithography setup. For a many years it seemed unlikely that I would find a non-toxic alternative. That changed when I participated in a weeklong workshop in Waterless lithography (a huge thank you to Jeff Sippel!). I was immediately intrigued and, after attending, fell in love with the process all over again. While it’s not a perfect substitute for stone lithography, it retains many of the same expressive qualities. It quickly became my go-to method.

More recently, I’ve also been exploring aluminum foil lithography, often referred to as kitchen lithography. I’ve been amazed by the simplicity of the process and the remarkable results it can achieve. In addition, I’ve incorporated the photo-lithography process into my practice. Much like my etchings, all of my images are hand-drawn—either directly onto the plate (for waterless or aluminum foil lithography) or onto Mylar for photo-lithography.

These alternative methods have expanded my creative possibilities while allowing me to remain true to the core values of lithography: craftsmanship, precision, and the expressive beauty of the drawn line.
